Climbing Kids

Climbing Kids. This post from KSL talks about the benefits of getting children climbing. I have had my toddler (4 year old, can I call him a teenager yet?)  enrolled in the Mo Mini class for the last month. It's been great to watch him progress. The level of challenge is perfect for him and he can easily see the progress each week. "I made it higher than last time", “I climbed farther than last time". He can use it pretty much everywhere he goes, he is not always allowed to climb everything everywhere, but he really believes he has the ability as he has been attending his climbing class.

He gets his climbing shoes and harness and when he isn’t climbing he is playing on the padded floor. I have been impressed with the amount of the little people at the climbing gym. I haven't seen anyone with their phone on the wall, but maybe there is a Pikatcho up there.

Here he is in matching green on the kid’s boulder wall

I am not and never have been a climber. I participated in team sports pretty much exclusively while growing up. It was a great way to challenge myself during practice and games. Then it all ended, but I still was competitive. I lost opportunity to be competitive. I wasn't really able to keep the same commitment without a team or a coach right with me every day. In school I did some intermural baseball and ultimate Frisbee but the commitment to excel wasn’t there, it was just for fun. Hiking and climbing are also cheap. Biking isn’t. Cheap things are the best for college students.

Climbing, hiking, biking are all activities that don't need other players, umpires or coaches. The challenges are there but so is time to be reflective. This isn't so much important for my toddler, but I recognize how it's important to start him early so he can implement into his adolescence life.
